    The main plot of Spotlight surrounds the case of uncovering the truth behind the Catholic church. Once the team find out that pedophilia within the priesthood is far more prevalent than they have been led to believe, they also discover that great efforts are made to cover this up. Far from being ignorant of the incidences of sexual abuse, church elders and dignitaries are well aware of it, and go to enormous efforts to hide it from the public. Essentially, there was way more ugliness beneath what is seen on the surface. 

    The Catholic church hides the unethical secret about the sexual abuse of the children from the public eye in the movie, Spotlight. We want to use cloches as framing devices. The cloche symbolizes the Catholic church and what is revealed represents the crimes and the ugliness of the church. A plate covered by a cloche will be served onto a table which parallels with how the church puts itself out to the public. Then it is implied that there are more plates that are the exactly the same placed next to each other. As one of the cloches open, unexpectedly, a children’s toy and cockroaches appear. Eventually, all the cloches open up and reveal the toys and the roaches. The surprise elements symbolize that beneath the surface of a holy church, there is trauma and ugliness. The corroded toys that are covered and surrounded by roaches represent how damaged the children are because of the sexual abuse. Furthermore, the implication of multiple cloches having the same reveal symbolizes that the crimes committed by the preists are happening all over the world in multiple Catholic churches.
